From our superintendent
David Henderson:
July 2007
With the mercury rising so is the necessity of watering the greens during the day. The sprinklers are on an automated system so, unfortunately, they can’t be turned off to allow people to play through. The good news is that they will only run for three to four minutes. Any members of the crew who are hand watering will do everything they can to not disrupt play, but unfortunately with only an hour to get all the greens cooled off they can’t stop watering completely. I’m sorry for any inconvenience.
If you’ve noticed tiny holes in the greens it’s because once a month we use the aerifiers to “needle tine” the greens. This allows water to soak down into the soil instead of running off.
Some of you may have children in our junior golf programs. As a parent myself I understand the concern over mixing pesticides and kids. I would like to assure you that on the days when junior golfers play the course I do not spray any pesticides or other chemicals. The one exception is an organic fertilizer derived from soybean hulls.
As always if you have any questions about any of the things we do or any of the chemicals we use and their timing please feel free to ask.
